What should I wear?
Answer: We want you to feel your best when you come to the opera. So, wear what makes you most comfortable. When you arrive, you will see anything from formal wear to dressy casual. Opening Nights/Saturdays tend to be more formal than other performance nights. If you would like more advice or have questions, call us! 901-257-3100.
Where is the Orpheum, and where should I park?
Answer: The Orpheum is located at 203 S. Main Street, Memphis, TN 38103. Parking is available in the MLGW garage next door (Entrance on Front Street) for a fee. There is also paid parking available in the lot across the street from the Orpheum on Beale.
Are you a touring organization?
Answer: Unlike a lot of companies that perform at the Orpheum, Opera Memphis is a professional opera company that operates in Memphis year-round on a full-time basis. While some of our sets/scenery and costumes are often rented from other companies, each of our productions is prepared and rehearsed in Memphis and specifically for Memphis. Our education/outreach division does, however, tour throughout the tri-state area.
Are there restaurants nearby?
Answer: Yes! Many are within walking distance. Check out our guide for more information. Snacks and cocktails are also available for purchase in the lobby.
Will they be singing in English?
Answer: There are some operas in English. A lot are not. Don't worry! We've got translations above the stage. Combine that with the music and the emotion on the stage, and you'll understand every moment!
I have an extra ticket; what can I do with it?
Answer: Bring a friend, co-worker or loved one for a fabulous night on the town! If for some reason that is not possible, you are welcome to donate your ticket back to Opera Memphis for a tax-deductible donation. Donations must be made 24 hours in advance. Please call Audience Services for more details: 901-257-3100.
I'm not sure I can get there on time. Is this a problem?
Answer: We regret to inform you that there is NO LATE SEATING. This is a courtesy to both the singers and other members of the audience. If you should happen to arrive after the opera has begun, you will be asked to view the performance on a closed-circuit television monitor, conveniently located in the lobby. You'll be able to take your seat during the first intermission. In order to get the most out of your opera experience, it's really important to arrive prior to curtain time. We recommend 45 minutes before curtain. Evening performances this season will begin at 7:30 pm and matinᅢᄅes at 3:00 pm.
I'd rather not drive - do I have an option?
Answer: Yes! Opera Memphis has a shuttle you are welcome to take. The shuttle leaves from the Clark Opera Memphis Center at 6745 Wolf River Parkway 1 hour before curtain. The small fee of $20 per single ticket buyer and $10 per subscription holder is a wonderful way to avoid the trouble of driving to and from the theatre. Pre-paid reservations only. To make your reservation, please contact Ann Barber at 901-257-3100 ext. 106.
Okay, I got here early. What is there to do?
Answer: Congratulations. You will have time to enjoy the wonderful theatre in all its glamour and not feel rushed to get to your seats before curtain. In addition, there is a lot to do. Opera Memphis offers a free pre-opera talk that takes place 50 minutes before curtain. People-watching is another fun activity and has been a part of the opera experience ever since Charles Garnier built the Paris Opera House in 1874. In addition, there are snacks and drinks available for purchase before the show.
What should I do after I take my seat?
Answer: First and foremost, relax! It's time to let go of the stresses and strains of the day and reward yourself. Some people like to take the minutes before a performance to share an intimate conversation with their seatmates. Others prefer to look over the program book, read the synopsis or articles, and find out how many intermissions to expect. Don't forget to turn off your cell phone, and if you plan to have a throat lozenge or hard candy handy, now's the time to fish it out of your purse.
How long will the performance last?
Answer: It really depends on the performance. most tend to last between to and a half hours and three hours, including intermissions. Feel free to call our box office at 901-257-3100 for run times of specific performances.
What if I have to leave the hall during the performance?
Answer: If you need to do so, please exit quietly. Please be aware that re-entry will not be permitted until intermission. This is a courtesy to our singers as well as other audience members who are caught up in the moment.
Can I take pictures, video or audio?
Answer: The taking of photographs and the use of recording devices are strictly prohibited.
