Opera Memphis Announces 2010-2011 Season
A Season of Collaboration, New Work, and Live Animals!
After an exciting and innovative 2009-2010 season, which included performances at GPAC, the Clark Opera Memphis Center and the Orpheum Theatre, Opera Memphis continues to reach out to non-traditional neighborhoods in its upcoming 2010-2011 season. Opera Memphis begins the season at the Orpheum Theatre in the South Main district of downtown Memphis, traveling to midtown for the second show. January and February’s collaboration with Playhouse on the Square will mark the first time in its 55 year history that Opera Memphis has performed a mainstage production in midtown Memphis. Opera Memphis returns to the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts for the final show of the season, having last performed there in spring of 2004.

A staple of the standard operatic repertoire, AIDA ranks number 16 on Opera America’s list of the 20 most performed operas in North America. Grand scenery, a large chorus and live animals are all part of the AIDA experience. Starring Kishna Davis (PORGY AND BESS, PAGLIACCI) as Aida. Hugo Vera makes his Opera Memphis debut as Radames. Italian with English titles.
Michael Ching’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM – OPERA A CAPPELLA

Maestro Michael Ching puts an innovative twist on an beloved classic in the world-premiere of his new operatic version of William Shakespeare’s A MIDSUMMER NIGHT’S DREAM. The production will be the first attempt by any North American opera company at a full-length mainstage opera performed entirely a cappella. Opera Memphis joins forces with Playhouse on the Square to mount a production exciting to both the opera lover and avid theatre-goer. Memphis’ favorite a cappella group Delta Cappella will be featured as “the players” in the story’s “play within a play” and as the “vocal orchestra.” Performed in English.
Gioachino Rossini’s THE BARBER OF SEVILLE

Based on the first of the plays from the Figaro trilogy by French playwright Pierre Beaumarchias, Rossini’s THE BARBER OF SEVILLE has been described as the opera buffa of all opere buffe, proving to be one of the greatest masterpieces of comedy within music. In a collaboration with Mississippi Opera, Opera Memphis takes BARBER on a regional tour, with performances in Jackson, MS, Cleveland, MS, and culminating in Memphis at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts. Featuring the Opera Memphis debuts of Audrey Luna and Jordan Shanahan. Mrs. Luna makes her Metropolitan Opera debut with in the 2010-2011 season as the Queen of the Night. Italian with English titles.
