Opera Memphis’ fifth annual MIDTOWN OPERA FESTIVAL takes place March 31-April 9 at Playhouse on the Square. The Festival is anchored by three intimate operas, all by living American composers: John Musto's Later the Same Evening, Jake Heggie's Three Decembers, and Hilliard & Boresi's Blue Viola. Each opera is preceeded by an Opera Prelude Talk, providing insight into the story, characters, and music we'll experience. After the opera, the audience is invited to remain in their seats for a Talk Back with the artists and creative team.

Surrounding the operas, we've curated world of additional events, called Fringe Events, that are designed to deepen your experience, highlight something new, or expand the definition of what an opera festival can be. This year, the Fringe Event calendar features a one-of-a-kind performance of Arnold Scheonberg's groundbreaking work for voice and orchestra, Pierrot Lunaire (with photography by Memphis' own Joey Miller); a performance by Memphis hip-hop artist Marco Pavé and New Orleans' Alfred Banks as part of their River Kings Tour; a look behind the scenes of our latest commission, By/In Memphis (premiering Spring 2018); the return of Opera Takes Flight, in which aerialists perform to opera's greatest hits; and the ever-popular Cartoons & Cereal, featuring some of those great classic cartoons that introduced generations to the sound of opera.

Throughout the ten days of Midtown Opera Festival, the Festival Lounge serves as a meeting place for our audience and friends. Featuring live entertainment and a bar offering signature cocktails, the Lounge is your space to unwind, discuss the show you've just seen, or simply mingle with old and new friends.

TICKETS may be purchase to individual events or as part of the Festival Pass.
