This operatic version of the classic story is told using music by Mozart, Donizetti and Rossini. It is a great jumping-off point for young audiences to explore opera! A game of hide and seek is ruined for three Billy Goats Gruff when a troll blocks a bridge, preventing them from being able to go home. Two goats resolve to go home a different, longer way and share their difficulties with grownups. One goat, however, not wanting to abandon the beloved doll that’s been snatched from her, tromps to the crest of the bridge and, confronting the bully, inadvertently pushes him into the creek below. Concerned for his well-being, she shows her would-be adversary kindness by asking if he’s okay. By the time the two other goats return with help, she’s able to introduce a soggy, forlorn ex-bully as their new friend.
The opera will be performed by the Opera Memphis Artists-in-Residence and can include a small children’s ensemble. Opera Memphis will provide a study guide and music preparatory materials, as well as a volunteer to read the fairy tale to Kindergarten classes prior to the performance.
