Black Roots of Opera

The history of opera is not monochromatic. For centuries Black opera singers have pushed boundaries and modeled excellence. Memphis has a special role in this history as well, as the childhood home of Robert McFerrin Sr., the first Black man to sing at The Met, and the adult home of Florence Cole Talbert McCleave, the first Black woman to sing on a major European stage. Join us for an exploration of the lives an art of these exceptional artists, in programs suited for all ages.
