Seventy years ago, opera in Memphis began as an act of conviction: that this city deserved its own stage for the world’s great voices. Seven decades later, that conviction has grown into something the founders could not have imagined, a company that performs in concert halls and planetariums, on gallery lawns and in every ZIP code of the city. This anniversary season is built around two ideas at once, the new work being written here now and the artists returning to the place that shaped them. It carries the company across more stages and more partnerships than any milestone year before it. And nearly all of it is rooted in stories that could only come from Memphis, told by the people who know the city best.
